The Institute of Ecological Conservation (IEC) is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization based in Brunei. It is established in August 2022, which is Brunei’s first institute focusing on global ecological conservation. Headquartered in Bandar Seri Begawan, Negara Brunei Darussalam, IEC now has approximately 20 staff and over 100 members working on environmental research and conservation projects in a variety of areas including climate change, ocean conservation, and green living. The institute is guided by the values of “Better Earth, Better Life, Better Tomorrow”, believing that “hard work/ enthusiastic commitment” can make a difference to the global environment and “positive action” can make the earth a better place.
IEC exists because our fragile planet demands immediate action to make a difference. We are committed to eco-environmental conservation, and we care for the homeland on which all life depends, especially the research and protection of marine ecology. Our mission is to curb the deterioration of the earth’s environment by arousing the public’s awareness of environmental protection and acting together to protect our homeland and create a better future in which humans and nature live in harmony.
IEC was founded by Norhayati bin Sharifah and Hock lee, two experienced and broad-minded aspirants. Both of them have rich practical experience and ambitions in ecological conservation. They have participated in many environmental protection volunteer activities, from which they acquired profound insights into the current crises facing the planet, such as global warming, declining biodiversity, depletion of mineral resources, frequent natural disasters, etc. Brunei, as an island country, will also face the existential crisis caused by the rising sea level in the future with global warming and melting glaciers. Being well aware of the crisis their homeland will confront, the two gentlemen are determined to protect the home where they work, grow, and live now and in the future from harm and prevent the destruction of the home on which humanity depends through their personal commitment and team efforts.
join nowIEC members include experts, academics, policy researchers in the field of ecology, as well as dedicated volunteers. They come from all over the world, including Singapore, New Zealand, the Philippines, etc. We gather together for the same goal. We selflessly contribute our strengths to unite as one to address the pressing issues facing our beautiful home so that we can leave a vibrant planet for the next generation.
IEC contributes to green, circular, and low-carbon development around the world mainly by conducting policy research, introducing and demonstrating best practices, and providing professional support. We promote the ultimate achievement of our various project goals through active cooperation and communication with relevant parties.
We keep focusing on both domestic and global ecological issues and promote tangible progress in ecological conservation through various projects:
With a great prospect of development, IEC is Brunei’s first ecological conservation institute that acts locally and thinks globally. IEC is a vibrant and dynamic organization that provides unlimited development space for its members. Here, everyone can display their ambitions and work towards the common goal of “ecological conservation”. Our leaders are in the prime of life and have rich industry experience, and can point the right direction for the development of the institute. We have a well-established organizational framework, a free and comfortable creative environment, extensive financial support, and a sound evaluation system, which provides ample space for our members to bring their talents into play. We also have a senior legal team to protect our research achievements from being misused by third parties to mislead and defraud the public.
Although IEC has been established for a short time, we have broad prospects and an indomitable momentum to move forward. We are highly motivated and believe that unity and hard work will lead to success; we are conscientious and meticulous, focusing on every detail. Each of our projects has been carefully analyzed and evaluated to ensure that they meet the actual development needs, and our ecological conservation projects are implemented according to local conditions. To date, we have provided sustainable development advice to many enterprises and institutions. Joining us will be a new starting point for your career, not an end. Our future is dedicated to the ecological protection of the world. We look forward to your joining and let’s create a better future together.

Mr. Sharifah is the founder of IEC. Graduated from the University of Brunei, he has rich overseas study experience and extensive knowledge. Mr. Sharifah is close to nature and loves nature. He has traveled extensively around the world. During those journeys, Mr. Sharifah gradually realized the serious damage caused by human activities to the natural environment. Hence, he actively participated in environmental conservation volunteer activities during his study abroad and also worked for many environmental conservation organizations where he has accumulated a lot of practical experience. With a strong sense of patriotism and ambition, Mr. Sharifah decided to return to Brunei, his motherland, after realizing the environmental crisis Brunei would confront in the future, and founded IEC in the hope of slowing down environmental degradation and creating a better home through his personal commitment and team efforts.
Mr. Lee is the chief legal counsel of the institute as well as the best friend of Mr. Sharifah. Mr. Lee graduated from the University of Brunei and then went to the Chinese University of Hong Kong for further study. Influenced by Mr. Sharifah, Mr. Lee is also a devoted conservationist who has actively participated in environmental conservation volunteer activities and served as a legal intern in many environmental protection agencies. After returning to Brunei, he dedicated himself to Brunei’s legal industry and accumulated rich practical experience in the field. In 2022, responding to the call of Mr. Sharifah, he determined to devote himself to environmental conservation and jointly founded IEC, hoping to slow down environmental degradation through team efforts and leave a clean and beautiful Earth for future generations.
